Common questions

Do I have to pay a private parking charge?▼

Not automatically. A private parking charge is a contractual claim, not a criminal fine, and the operator must follow the rules to enforce it. Some charges have defects, such as unclear signage, a missed grace period, or a late Notice to Keeper under POFA 2012. Many are valid. A free scan tells you which applies to yours, including when paying is the sensible option.

How long do I have to appeal a parking charge?▼

Usually 28 days from the date of the notice for a first appeal to the operator. If it is rejected, you usually have 28 days to appeal to POPLA (BPA operators) or IAS (IPC operators). Council PCN timelines differ, so check your notice.

What is POFA 2012?▼

The Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 sets the conditions for a private parking company to pursue the registered keeper instead of the driver. The Notice to Keeper must arrive within 14 days if no windscreen ticket was issued, or between day 28 and day 56 if one was, and must contain specific wording. If not, keeper liability may fail.

Can I still appeal after a debt collection letter?▼

Yes. A debt collection letter does not remove your right to escalate to POPLA or IAS if you have not already. Our Debt & Escalation Response Pack covers this stage.

How much does it cost?▼

The scan is always free. If you have grounds and want the drafted letter, it is a one-off payment by stage: £9.99 for a new charge, £29.99 after a rejection or debt letter, £49.99 for a Letter Before Claim, and £99.99 at the court, CCJ, or bailiff stage. No subscription.
